At Spanish Trail Dentistry, our Pensacola FL dentist, Dr. Jeff Strickland offers a comprehensive range of dental services to patients of all ages. Our practice is committed to helping all our patients achieve and maintain healthy & beautiful smiles they can enjoy for a lifetime.
Onlay restorations are custom-made for each patient from a composite material, tooth-colored porcelain or gold. An onlay restoration is also sometimes called a partial crown and it is used to conservatively repair a tooth that has a large, defective filling or a tooth that's been damaged by decay or trauma. When Dr. Strickland determines that you could benefit from an onlay restoration, he will send precise directions to a lab so an onlay can be made just for you.
How an Onlay Differs from an Inlay
Onlay and inlay restorations are essentially identical except that onlays are larger and designed to repair damage to teeth with one or more involved cusps. Like inlay restorations, onlays are durable and designed to last many years. However, onlays are not always permanent as they may need to be replaced at some point in time.
Who is A Good Candidate for Onlay Restorations
Patients who may be good candidates for onlay restorations include:
- Patients with broken or fractured teeth
- Patients wishing to improve the appearance of their smiles
- Patients with decayed teeth
- Patients with fillings which have fractured
- Patients with large fillings
How The Process of Getting an Onlay Works
Typically, when you visit our Pensacola dentist office for an onlay restoration, you will need to schedule two separate appointments. During your first visit, we will take some impressions of your tooth, which are necessary for creating your custom onlay and a temporary restoration.
Once the tooth is numbed, Dr. Strickland will remove any decay and/or old filling material. He will then clean and prepare the tooth and shape its surface so the onlay restoration can be fitted. He will then provide you with a temporary filling to protect the tooth while your onlay is being custom-crafted just for you at a dental laboratory.
During your second visit, Dr. Strickland will cement your new onlay in place. He may need to make a few minor adjustments for a precise fit and comfortable bite. We will provide you with after-care instructions once your onlay restoration is completed. We will stress the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and regular dental checkups as all these things are key to making your onlay last as long as possible.
