About Bruxism

Bruxism (BRUK-siz-um) refers to the involuntary or habitual grinding of the teeth or clenching of the jaw, which can occur during the day or night. This clenching and grinding occurs due to malfunctions of the chewing reflex. The incisors and canines (from six upper and lower teeth) will grind against each other from side to side. This action puts strain on the medial ptergoid muscles and the temporomandibular joints. Most humans will experience bruxism at some point in their life and it is best to promptly address bruxism

Reasons To Treat Bruxism

Bruxism is frequently misdiagnosed if diagnosed at all and causes tooth wear. Only a trained professional or dentist can tell the difference between bruxing wear and wear caused by other factors like aggressive brushing, acidic drinks and abrasive foods. The main reasons why bruxism should be treated promptly include:

1.     Gum Recession & Tooth Loss – bruxism is one of leading causes of gum recession and tooth lost; It damages the soft tissue and it leads to loose teeth and deep pockets were bacteria are able to colonize and destroy supporting bone.

2.     Occlusal Trauma – The abnormal wear patterns of the occlusal (chewing) services can leave to fractures in the teeth which may require restorative treatment.

3.     Arthritis – bruxing can eventually lead to painful arthritis in the temporomandibular (TMJ) joints which allow the jaw to open smoothly.

4.     Myofascial Pain – grinding associated with bruxism an eventually shoten and blunt your teeth and lead to muscle pain in the myofascial region and debilitating headaches.

Earaches, depression, headaches, eating orders and anxiety are the most common symptoms of bruxism and can lead to chronic stress, Alzheimer’s disease and alcohol abuse.

Having just adopted two young boys, getting dental care up to par was a priority. The boys disagreed. They had only had very negative experiences and were crying at the thought of going to the dentist. Upon arriving, the ladies talked with the boys and teased out smiles. The first cleanings took a whiledue to lack of proper hygiene, but Dr. Strickland adn his team took the time to comfort, build rapport and teach the boys about good dental hygiene. We just finished the final fillings with no anxiety or tears. Dental appointments are taken in stride! Dr. Strickland and his great team have made a huge difference to my family. Thank you for making our smiles beautiful!

My daughter Debbie is a dental hygienist and we Readings and the Bass family know a good dentist when we use them ( Jeff )! Dr. Strickland and his entire staff are "the most to say the least". We would not think of using anyone else.

Dr. Strickland & Staff:

I want to share my happiness with you all about my decision to switch dental providers a little over 1 year ago.

My only regret is " why did I wait so long?".

Each of you make each visit an extremely pleasurable experience. Dr. Strickland, I love your "chair-side" manner and your attention to detail is outstanding. I find myself looking forward to my dental appointments rather than dreading the session.

The warm and welcoming greetings along with the family-like interaction that your patients receive from Mary Virginia, Beth, Deirdre, Kyline and
Jennifer are endearing and make me feel like a family member, rather than just another patient!

It all is such a pleasant and comforting experience.
