Braces For Adults
Although typically associated with teenagers, orthodontic appliances including Invisalign, metal braces and clear braces are becoming more and more common among adults. At any age, orthodontic braces can be used to correct bad bites and provide you with a smile you can feel confident about. That said, treatment time will take longer than it would for a patient still experiencing jaw growth and unaffected by gum disease. All in all, an adult can still experience the same healthy and aesthetic results as teenager, with extended treatment time.
Benefits Of Orthodontic Braces
Aside the self-esteem boost and confidence one may receive from the correction of misaligned teeth, having straight teeth can prevent a number of problems from occurring or getting any worse. Misaligned aligned teeth may lead to problems such as difficulty biting, chewing and even speaking properly. Some of the health benefits one may experience with healthy, straight teeth include:
· Reduction in general tooth decay
· Decreased likelihood of developing periodontal disease
· Decreased likelihood of tooth injury
· Reduction in digestive disorders
Types Of Braces
Over the last few years, advances in orthodontics have adapted to the busy lives of teenagers and adults. Today, patients have a wide variety of appliances to choose from to obtain beautiful, healthy teeth, including:
Traditional braces are comprised of individual brackets that are cemented to the teeth with a wire that applies pressure to guide the teeth to their proper position. Generally metal, traditional braces are also available in a clear synthetic material and tooth colored ceramic.
The Invisalign system is a set of clear, removable aligners that are invisible to those around you. Unlike traditional braces, with Invisalign patients will be able to eat and drink what they would like due to their removable capabilities.
Lingual braces are fixed to the interior side of the teeth and therefore cannot be see by onlookers. This orthodontic appliance is generally more expensive and may interfere with normal speech
